If your Arizona driver license is approaching its expiration date, renewing it is usually a straightforward process. Depending on your situation, you may be able to renew online or complete your renewal in person at an Arizona MVD or Authorized Third Party location.
Here’s what you should know before renewing your Arizona driver license.
When Can You Renew an Arizona Driver License?
Arizona allows you to renew your driver license up to six months before its expiration date. Arizona Department of Transportation
It’s a good idea to check your license periodically rather than waiting for a renewal notice. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Arizona does not have a formal process for sending driver license renewal notices. Arizona Department of Transportation
Can You Renew Your Arizona Driver License Online?
In many cases, yes. Most eligible Arizona drivers can renew their license through AZ MVD Now.
To renew online, sign in to your AZ MVD Now account and look for “Renew Now” under the My Credential section. Your eligibility and available options will be displayed through your account. Arizona Department of Transportation
Visit the official AZ MVD Now website
However, not every driver license renewal can be completed online.
When Do You Need to Renew in Person?
You may be required to complete your driver license renewal in person if MVD needs an updated photo, vision screening or identification documents. Arizona Department of Transportation
Arizona also requires drivers to periodically update the photo associated with their license. If an updated photo is required, you will need to visit a driver license facility rather than completing the entire process online. Arizona Department of Transportation
Before visiting a location, check the requirements associated with your specific license so you know which documents you may need to bring.
What About an Arizona Travel ID?
Renewing your driver license can also be an opportunity to obtain an Arizona Travel ID.
Since May 7, 2025, a standard Arizona driver license that is not REAL ID-compliant is no longer sufficient by itself for TSA identity verification at airport security checkpoints. An Arizona Travel ID, U.S. passport or another federally accepted form of identification can be used for domestic air travel. Arizona Department of Transportation
Obtaining a Travel ID requires an in-person visit for a new photo and presentation of the required identification documents. Arizona Department of Transportation
How Much Does Driver License Renewal Cost in Arizona?
Fees can depend on your age and the type of credential you are renewing. ADOT currently lists standard non-Travel driver license fees ranging from $10 to $25, depending on age. An Arizona Travel Driver License has a $25 original or renewal fee. Arizona Department of Transportation
Because fees and requirements can change, it’s a good idea to confirm the current amount before completing your transaction.
Renew Your Driver License at 1 Stop Motor Vehicle
If your renewal requires an in-person visit, an Authorized Third Party location may provide another option besides visiting a state MVD office. ADOT specifically lists Authorized Third Party driver license locations as an option for applicable driver license renewals. Arizona Department of Transportation
1 Stop Motor Vehicle offers convenient motor vehicle services at locations throughout the Phoenix area. Before visiting, confirm that your preferred location offers the driver license service you need and what documentation you should bring.
