What Types of License Plates Are Available in Arizona?
Arizona drivers can choose from standard plates as well as a large selection of specialty and personalized plates.
Specialty plates are available for numerous organizations, causes and interests, including educational institutions, professional sports teams, military and veteran organizations, tribal communities and charitable causes. Arizona continues to add new designs, so available options can change over time. Arizona Department of Transportation
Many specialty plates can also be personalized with your own approved combination of letters and numbers. Arizona Department of Transportation
What Is an Arizona Specialty License Plate?
A specialty license plate features a design associated with a particular organization, cause, institution or other approved group.
Most Arizona specialty plates have an additional $25 initial and annual fee. For many charitable specialty plates, $17 of that fee goes to the sponsoring organization. Arizona Department of Transportation
Arizona drivers have plenty to choose from. More than one million specialty plates were purchased or renewed during fiscal year 2026 alone. Arizona Department of Transportation
Because the available designs change, see Arizona MVD License Plates and Disability Placards page to check out the current options.
Can I Personalize an Arizona License Plate?
Yes. Arizona allows drivers to request personalized letters and numbers on eligible license plates.
Personalization generally adds an additional $25 annual fee, including when personalization is added to many specialty plates. Personalized plate requests are subject to MVD review and approval. Arizona Department of Transportation
Your requested combination must also be available, so having a few alternatives in mind can be helpful when choosing a personalized plate.
How Do I Get an Arizona Specialty or Personalized Plate?
Eligible plates can be ordered through AZ MVD Now, by mail or in person at an MVD or Authorized Third Party location. Arizona Department of Transportation
Some specialty plates have additional eligibility or documentation requirements, so the process can vary depending on the plate you’ve selected.
If you already have a plate on your vehicle, continue using your current plate until the replacement arrives.
What Are Arizona Disability Plates and Placards?
Arizona disability plates and placards allow eligible individuals to use designated accessible parking spaces when the person with the disability is the driver or passenger. Arizona Department of Transportation
There are two primary options:
Disability license plate: A plate attached to an eligible vehicle. The vehicle must be registered or leased to the qualifying person or the guardian of a qualifying minor.
Disability placard: A portable placard associated with the qualifying individual rather than one specific vehicle, allowing it to be used in another vehicle when that person is present. Arizona Department of Transportation
What Is the Difference Between a Permanent and Temporary Disability Placard?
Arizona offers both permanent and temporary disability placards.
Permanent placards are issued at no cost and do not expire. Temporary placards are also issued at no cost but are valid for six months. If the qualifying temporary condition continues beyond that period, a new medical certification is required. Arizona Department of Transportation
What Do I Need to Get a Disability Plate or Placard?
An application and medical certification are generally required when applying for an Arizona disability plate or placard.
Arizona accepts certification from qualifying medical professionals, including licensed physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, hospital administrators and physical therapists. Arizona Department of Transportation
A disability license plate is available for a permanent qualifying disability. A temporary disability does not qualify someone for a disability plate, although a temporary placard may be available. Arizona DOT Apps
Can I Get a Specialty Plate With a Disability Symbol?
Yes. Many Arizona specialty plates can be issued with the disability symbol for eligible individuals.
The disability symbol itself does not add an additional plate fee, although the regular specialty plate, personalization and applicable postage fees still apply. On personalized plates, the disability symbol uses one of the available character positions. Arizona Department of Transportation
Applications for plates with a disability symbol cannot currently be completed entirely online. They must be submitted by mail or through an MVD or Authorized Third Party office with the applicable documentation. Arizona Department of Transportation
What If My Arizona License Plate Is Lost, Stolen or Damaged?
Replacement plates are available.
A damaged plate can be replaced using the same letters and numbers. For security reasons, a lost or stolen standard plate is replaced with a new plate number. Arizona Department of Transportation
If your license plate was stolen, Arizona MVD recommends reporting the theft to local law enforcement before requesting the replacement. Arizona Department of Transportation

Many eligible license plate and placard transactions can be completed through an Authorized Third Party MVD provider.
