If your Arizona driver license has been suspended or revoked because of a DUI-related violation, you may be eligible for a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL). An Arizona SIIRDL license allows eligible drivers to regain restricted driving privileges while using a certified ignition interlock device. If you need a restricted driver license, ignition interlock license or help obtaining a SIIRDL in Arizona, understanding the eligibility requirements and application process can help you take the right steps toward getting back on the road.

At 1 Stop Motor Vehicle, we provide SIIRDL license services for eligible drivers at our Authorized Third Party MVD locations.

What Is a SIIRDL License in Arizona?

SIIRDL stands for Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License. It is an optional restricted driver license available to certain Arizona drivers whose driving privileges have been suspended or revoked because of a DUI-related violation.

Unlike a standard restricted permit that limits where you may drive, a SIIRDL allows you to drive anywhere in Arizona as long as the vehicle you operate has a certified ignition interlock device installed.

A SIIRDL is voluntary. Arizona MVD determines whether a driver is eligible.

Who Is Eligible for an Arizona SIIRDL?

Eligibility depends on your individual driving record and the action against your license. Arizona MVD indicates that drivers with a suspension or revocation resulting from certain DUI-related violations may qualify. Arizona Department of Transportation

Common requirements can include:

  • Verification that you are eligible for a SIIRDL
  • No other outstanding withdrawal actions on your driving record
  • Installation of a certified ignition interlock device
  • Completion of required alcohol treatment programs, when applicable
  • Proof of future financial responsibility, such as an SR-22, when required
  • Payment of applicable fees

MVD sends notices of eligibility to qualified drivers, and you can also check your eligibility through your AZ MVD Now account. Arizona Department of Transportation

What Is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An ignition interlock device is installed in a vehicle and requires the driver to provide a breath sample before the vehicle can be started. If the device detects alcohol above its preset limit, the vehicle will not start.

If an ignition interlock is required for your SIIRDL, it must be installed by an Arizona-certified provider and reported to MVD.

Drivers with an interlock requirement may only operate vehicles equipped with the required certified device. Arizona Department of Transportation

Do I Need an SR-22 to Get a SIIRDL?

Many SIIRDL applicants must provide proof of future financial responsibility, commonly through an SR-22 certificate filed by an Arizona-licensed insurance company.

However, an SR-22 is not required for a SIIRDL when it is related to an Admin Per Se suspension, according to Arizona MVD. Arizona Department of Transportation

Because requirements depend on the action against your license, verify what applies to your driving record before beginning the process.

How Do I Get a SIIRDL in Arizona?

Start by confirming your eligibility with Arizona MVD. Once you know you qualify, complete the requirements associated with your driving record, which may include installing an ignition interlock device, completing required treatment programs and providing proof of future financial responsibility.

Once your requirements have been completed and your ignition interlock installation has been reported, your SIIRDL must be issued through an MVD or eligible Third Party office.

This means eligible customers can visit 1 Stop Motor Vehicle for SIIRDL issuance rather than completing the entire process at a state MVD office.

Can I Get a SIIRDL at a Third Party MVD?

Yes. Arizona MVD specifically allows eligible SIIRDL licenses to be issued at MVD or Third Party offices after the necessary requirements have been completed. Arizona Department of Transportation

Before visiting, make sure you have confirmed your eligibility and completed any outstanding requirements associated with your driving record.

Can I Drive Anywhere With a SIIRDL?

An Arizona SIIRDL generally allows you to drive anywhere in the state as long as you comply with the restrictions associated with the license and operate a vehicle equipped with the required certified ignition interlock device. Arizona Department of Transportation

This is an important distinction between a SIIRDL and certain restricted permits, which may limit driving to specific purposes such as traveling to work, school or treatment.

Violations while driving under a SIIRDL can result in cancellation of the restricted license.

How Long Does a SIIRDL Last?

Your SIIRDL expires when the suspension or revocation associated with it ends. Having a SIIRDL does not necessarily mean your regular driving privileges are automatically restored once it expires.

Depending on your situation, you may still need to complete additional requirements, continue maintaining an ignition interlock device or reinstate your driving privileges.

If you’re approaching the end of your restricted-license period, read our Arizona Driver License Reinstatement: What You Need to Know guide for more information about the reinstatement process.

Does Time With a SIIRDL Count Toward My Ignition Interlock Requirement?

It can. For qualifying SIIRDLs associated with violations on or after January 1, 2023, time served with the SIIRDL may receive credit toward the driver’s overall ignition interlock requirement. Arizona Department of Transportation

Because the exact requirements depend on the driver’s record, verify your individual interlock timeframe with MVD.
